TLR Vision Frame - DRAFT 1
Last Friday night twelve of us from TLR got together at Steve Hayner's house. Our purpose was to have a conversation about a vision for TLR. We reminiced, made fun of ourselves, and had an all around great conversation. While we talked Steve took notes. We then locked him in a room until he finally produced the following draft of a vision statement for TLR.
Well, now it is time for the wider community to have a debate about it! We will begin this debate online and then the TLR twelve will get back together (sort of like on Super Friends). You are invited to join the conversation by reading, reflecting and then posting your comments. What words work and which ones don't? Do you have an alternative you want to propose?
VISION FRAME (draft #1)
Who are we?
~ an unlikely, unexpected, unedited, unfearful, unfunded UN-CHURCH (with our very own un-pastor :) ~
What do we value?
Dreaming
Wrestling
Journeying
Experimenting
Creating
Emerging
Welcoming
Connecting
Sharing
Why are we doing this?
We believe that God is calling us to:
emerge from what we have experienced as dying institutions
wrestle afresh with life and faith
love friend and stranger
engage the scriptures in dynamic, collaborative ways
experiment with new patterns of worship, community and service
connect our stories with God's bigger story
How are we living out our faith?
In order to nurture our relationships with God, with one another, and with Jesus' work in the world, we....
.....gently welcome one another into an open, thoughtful, diverse and transparent community
.....joyfully gather for Spirit-guided worship which includes organic music, creative encounter of scripture, authentic connection with Christ and one another at the Table, and fearless prayer
.....creatively enage the manifold gifts of our community in expressions of faith which are as original as our lives.
.....lovingly connect to the Grant Park neighborhood and to the world far beyond
The Living Room is....
.....simplicity on the other side of complexity
.....more about being "with" than speaking "to"
.....experimentation without anxiety
.....a place of grace in a wounded world
.....healing food for hungry hearts
......a wide journey in a suspended, local space
......raw life and naked wonder

Below is a synthesis of some other words that people have used to talk about what TLR values:
* Open-source
* Transgressive
* Instead of emerging, the word "germinating"
* Collaborative/conspiring- something that conveys the sense that we're all in this together (thanks RB)
* Irrevrant
* Welcoming
* Reverent or irrevrant - may not make sense that we value both. But that's sort of the point.
OTHERS???
I'm a big fan of the Living Room, although I don't live in Atlanta. I love the vision. I think it's welcoming, and also beautifully written. I did hesitate at the simplicity statement, though. I kinda think that's a little easy--I mean, putting 2 people in a room is complicated. So, I'm not sure you can genuinely claim simplicity. But the rest I thought was really life-giving.
In general, I prefer to strip our vision down to the bare essentials and avoid definition as much as possible. Not to be deliberately vague, but rather to avoid presumption and redundancy.
I'm interested to know how people who are not involved with TLR regularly would describe us. Honestly, even if it's critical. It might help those of us who are intimately involved to see things more clearly.
That's intimately involved with TLR, not one another. No shenanigans here. ;)
Sounds wonderful! You guys are great!
I'm one of the people not regularly involved, yet loving what you are doing. This statement is beautiful and reflects what I experienced in your community. I'm wondering how much of this vision is dependant on the participants - local, as it were. How much could translate to a completely different community? And if it did translate, what would that community come out looking like?
Anyway - I'm grateful that TLR exists in Atlanta. Blessings as you go.
Great comments thus far! I would like to invite critical insights and thoughts about this vision thing that we concocted.
Laura got us started when she admitted her hesitation around the "simplicity statement". I tend to agree with her...
What other stupid things are we saying that are in need of further reflection/debate? I personally don't like being called an "un-pastor" ;)
Are you still meeting?
Yes, irishdans we are still meeting! Come visit us sometime. Our church address is: 645 Grant St SE, ATL 30312
Sorry to leave this comment here, but since I have no email address for anyone here to send to...
Thought you all might be interested in this event. Worship @ the Welcome Table is loosely classified as "Emergent" and I think would be of interest to your members!

Holy Trinity Parish in Decatur offers an alternative evening Eucharist called “Worship @ the Welcome Table” on the first Saturday of the month at 6 p.m.
This month, on the eve of Holy Week, we offer a contemplative, interactive experience of the Stations of the Cross. For this Eucharist, instead of the liturgy of the Word, we will have a period of time to explore an abbreviated Stations of the Cross, each with an interactive element – lectio divina, meditative writing/reflecting, individual prayer and meditation, votive prayer candles, and even an outreach project. As parishioners explore these stations at their own pace, musicians will provide live Taize music to accompany the experience. We will conclude with a Eucharist encircling the altar (the “Welcome Table”) in the middle of the parish hall. We hope this will be a powerful and moving way to begin your Holy Week experience.

but emergent isn't a worship style, tracy...
isn't it, rather, a theological and ecclesiological posture?
